Annuals and Perennials are both great. They provide us with beautiful flowers and we provide them with a home. One blooms all summer long and doesn't come back and the other doesn't bloom all summer long but does come back?
Which one is right for you, and where should you use them?
ANNUALS
Annuals provide season-long color but they die at the end of the year.
When & Where
Use annuals when high color is needed all season long. These can be planted in containers, hanging baskets, or in the ground. Annuals can be used in high traffic areas near sidewalks, entrances, driveways, patios, and curb sides for maximum enjoyment with minimum work. They can also be planted in patches in large beds with perennials to add color without resorting to filling the entire bed with annuals that would have to be replaced each year.
PERENNIALS
Perennials come back on their own year after year but often bloom for a shorter period of time. Some bloom in spring, others in summer, and some in fall.
When & Where
Use perennials when a lower maintenance planting is needed. These plants are best used in the ground if you wish for them to survive and come back next year. Remember, it is possible to have perennial plantings that are colorful all season long. This is done by planting a combination of plants that have different bloom periods.
